FAQs

All you need to know and more!

Do I have to know how to meditate?

No! My meditations are for everyone – beginner or advanced levels.

All you need is a quiet space, the desire to calm your mind, and a willingness to try!

How do I know if I’m doing it right?

If you are sitting and breathing and listening, you are doing it right.

Try not to worry so much about the technicalities of it all.

If you find your mind wandering (as it will) slowly come back to your breath and my voice.

I am here to guide you.

How can I concentrate on my breath?

Take long deep breaths into your lungs rather than short shallow breaths.

Feel the cool temperature of the breath as it enters your nose, filling your lungs. Notice how warm the breath is as you exhale.

If you’d like you can visualise the breath’s passage – entering in through the nose, down the back of your throat, through your larynx, and into your windpipe, filling your lungs, oxygenating your alveoli, and exhaling back out.

You may also like to visualise your breath as a healing light entering your body as it oxygenates your blood, cleansing the toxins out as you exhale CO2.

How will I benefit mentally from meditation?

Studies have found that over time meditation practice can help reduce pain, depression, stress, and anxiety.

Calming down your sympathetic nervous system through meditation can also decrease emotional reactivity.

What does my parasympathetic branch have to do with relaxation?

When you encounter a threat, your sympathetic nervous system kicks in, releasing stress hormones that help you either run or fight back.

Once the danger has passed, your parasympathetic nervous system activates and allows you to rest and relax.

When the parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) is activated, it slows our heart and breathing rates, lowers blood pressure, and promotes digestion.

Our body enters a state of relaxation, and this relaxation breeds recovery.

How should I sit during meditation?

The most important thing is that you are comfortable.

Take a seat on the floor, cushion, or a chair. Please avoid lying down as you may fall asleep.

When you are in a comfortable seated position – roll your shoulders up and back. Imagine that there is a string pulling the top of your head up to the ceiling. An open comfortable posture welcomes an easy airflow.

I want you to be as comfortable as possible so that your concentration isn’t on your seating.

Why is mindful breathing important in meditation?

Mindful breathing is helpful for us to stay present and it gives us an anchor – our breath.

When we get distracted by an obtrusive thought, the breath acts as an anchor to bring us back to the present moment.

How does meditation invoke relaxation?

Through meditation, you are essentially deactivating your sympathetic nervous system and turning on the parasympathetic branch.

How can I physically benefit from meditation?

Meditation stabilizes blood circulation in the body and regulates blood pressure, heartbeat, metabolism, and other essential biological functioning.

Meditation can improve physical health by boosting immune system functions, regulating hormonal discharge, and decreasing cellular inflammation.

Will meditation cure all my problems?

No, meditation is not a magic pill. Meditation does not diagnose, cure, prevent or treat disease.

Meditation is a practice and skill that will get better with time and has innumerable benefits.

Learning to let go of your expectations of meditation is hard but it’s also part of the process.

The more you meditate, the more you will let go of expectations and begin enjoying the present moment.
